Cape Town is special in so many ways because it is an all-rounder due to the fact that you can do almost anything! Let’s start with Table Mountain. This is a view from the air of the cableway which (how awesome is this) gives you a free return ride on your birthday should you bring your ID on the day! Sweet!

Lions head, another favourite, is extremely popular for hikes and busy each day. Follow Full Moon Hike if you would like to keep up with the Full Moon Hike events that take place each month which should definitely be on your bucket list if you haven’t taken part already. Always remember when hiking at night to stay in large groups for safety and keep the mountain clean!

Surfers paradise! Cape Town has waves, beautiful beaches and talented surfers!

Houtbay is a whole new world! Here you see it from Chapmans Peak which is a total must see.

Cape Town Areas Up In Flames

Cape Town Fires 07/02/19

Just after the recovery of the Lions Head/Signal Hill fire, Two more broke out in Cape Town today under high-temperature circumstances. Design for Change

Architectural Design, amongst all other types, has the ability to be “life-changing” and better yet, able to change the world. Many designers often focus on aesthetic features and generating some form of income.

Design falls into two categories: aesthetic design and problem-solving design, although problem-solving design can still be aesthetically pleasing.

AESTHETIC DESIGN

This refers to how we think and feel about a product or design. The first impression plays a big role here when something is nice to look at therefore aesthetically pleasing. A common example of aesthetic design is certain high heels and their visually appealing style, opposing to the endless pain women go through wearing them. As someone once said, “beauty is pain!”

Below are the three categories of aesthetics:

VISUAL AESTHETICS

This is visually appealing design consisting of elements such as colour, pattern, shape, balance and texture. Humans are very visual therefore designers often aim to create things that are beautiful and nice to look at.

MATERIAL AESTHETICS

These are the materials used in the design with elements such as texture, weight, comfort and shape. This refers to the sleek design of the new watch you just bought or your new jacket that you shouldn’t have bought, but couldn’t resist.

SOUND AESTHETICS

This refers to the sounds of the design. For example comparing two different speakers. Another example is the start of the engine of a car. You will hear the difference of sound.

PROBLEM-SOLVING DESIGN

In order to solve problems with any form of design, you need to have a strong understanding of whats happening around you. Following social media, the news and conducting research can help gain some insight. Some of the main topics to target with design (for change) are:

HOMELESS

In the past, designers have creatively approached homelessness with design strategies to supply shelter and housing. How can you as a designer approach this?

NATURAL DISASTERS

Think of ways to act after a disaster. For example, there was an earthquake resistant school designed in Thailand. Prevent fires by designing communities surrounded by fire breaks.

ENVIRONMENT

How can we conserve the planet with design? Think green design, recycling, sustainability. Solar powered designs have become a very effective approach.

CRIME

Crime is a global issue. Architectural design can be utilized to create safer environments. Cities can be designed in ways that are better for surveillance.

Think bigger remember that your idea could change someone else’s life. Collaborate with other designers and address social/environmental issues. Create projects. Design for change.

A powerful, tranquil space | The Yoga Room

Clouded walls with glossy, fine golden lines spiraling around each other, the interior of  The Yoga Room creates a comforting and safe feel as you walk in.

Situated up in Vredehoek, the studio opened doors in July 2017. Suited for all levels, no matter where you’re at, the small classes are created to fit each yogi. I spent some time here during Celebrate Spring with 30 days of Yoga by Yoom. It involved some dedicated early mornings, of which now have become a healthy routine in my life.

I spoke to Elsa van Niekerk, the founder of The Yoga Room, about her goals with regards to the studio and asked her to invite us a little into her background.

The Yoga Room

E: It is just over a year old and I love what it is growing into. I wanted to create a smaller, more intimate yoga space in Cape Town and offer authentic yoga, i.e slow it down a bit, allow space for meditation, breathing, just being. My aim is to make it as inclusive as possible and it’s wonderful to know that many of our clients started doing yoga here for the first time. It really is a studio that caters for all shapes, sizes, and ages. Our teachers are also very experienced which allows us to focus on individual attention and guidance. It has been a great experience so far to build this studio right in the heart of the community.

The first time I did yoga was at a gym in London. The class was taught by a woman well into her 60’s – I was fascinated by her energy and walked out of class feeling great.  It took some time to build up a practice though, but now it is a great way to tune into myself. To really get in touch with my mind and body. I did my training in New York at the renowned ISHTA Yoga School where I found my spiritual home – their teaching philosophy of focusing on the individual and drawing from the teachings of Hatha, Tantra, and Ayurveda inspires me.

Physically it’s made me much stronger and being an asthmatic since birth it has helped me tremendously to learn how to breathe properly. I’ve seen countless times at the studio how much benefit people get from being in a calm space, away from the rush of  life, focused on breathing and moving and tapping into themselves

Elsa, what advice could you provide the beginner yogi, or perhaps someone that has never tried it?

E: I realise it’s daunting to start something new and it seems there is an expectation that you need to look or be a certain way to do yoga. But you really don’t need to live a certain lifestyle, chant, say ohm or be able to touch your toes to start a practice. It really is not about that! So my advice would be to find a beginners class and try to stick to a routine, come a few weeks in a row and slowly build up the confidence to get to know the different poses and breathing techniques.

The diversity of our classes – it ranges from Gentle Yoga for the older practitioner to moms & babies yoga.

GET UNRAVELED | Yoom Yogi

As part of the CELEBRATE SPRING with 30 Days of Yoga Challenge by Yoom Wellness, my experience at Unraveled was unforgettable. The classes were strong, vibey and filled with energy.

Situated in Cape Town’s ever-popular Bree Street, Unraveled Yoga provides their own signature style of Vinyasa classes, much needed for the ultimate fulfilling day. Maya Pratt, the founder, gives us some food for thought:

My aim for the studio is to merge the beautiful and chaotic qualities of city life to the essence of yoga – finding your peace/stillness/tranquility within the mayhem of everyday life.

Our aim for the Celebrate Spring Challenge was to create awareness around yoga. How has yoga benefited you?

M: As a person, it has opened up a space to be totally present and become more aware of how my body works and moves. I’ve always liked to be active, in different ways, and yoga was a great addition that also brought a mindful component to movement. Now I am an instructor and a practitioner and love finding the balance of enjoying my yoga and being able to share it with others.

What advice do you have for someone that has never tried yoga?

M: You’ll never know until you try – pick a studio, pick a class time, commit to it and show up. Do that again and again and you’ll definitely find a sweet spot. Of course, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but love it or hate, you will learn something about your body or about your mind and you can always take that with you.

I regret going to yoga – said no one ever!

Live to Learn | SELF TAUGHT YOGI

Loosen up your mind before you loosen up your body.

I am a self-taught Yogi as of 2 years now (and growing) and it has had a powerful impact on my life both physically and mentally. I started yoga during an emotional stage in my life where I was struggling with, okay I’ll be honest here, a break-up, and I felt that I needed to switch off for an hour or two each day.

I had always seen others doing yoga and I assumed it was never for me. Turned out, I was just clueless! There is more to yoga than you know, it healed me and helped me through one rocky road. So grab a mat and listen up!

Yoga is EPIC. Heres why:

  1. You don’t have to practice it alone. Get your pets involved or your friends, get a yoga buddy!SELF TAUGHT YOGI
  2. Insomniac? Me too! Don’t be a night owl. Yoga is extremely calming and helps us relax our muscles. After a few weeks, it can make a dramatic improvement on sleep.
  3. Kick the depression. The practice of mindfulness in meditation is proven to increase serotonin levels and give you a boost!
  4. Back pain can be treated through yoga if done correctly. Please note that professional advice and classes are highly advised for this as back pain can be worsened in some cases.
  5.  Cure that hangover. There are poses such as fish and plow that can improve metabolism and create more balance in the body causing you to feel more refreshed.
  6. Those that suffer from Arthritis can practice yoga to maintain strength and flexibility.
  7. You can yoga it up ANYWHERE. Literally. Tarryn Hardwicke
  8. Health and wellness, in general, is improved. You are guaranteed to start feeling better mind, spirit, and body.
  9. FACT: Dating apps ranked those who mentioned “yoga” in their profiles, most attractive. BELIEVE IT, BABY.
  10. It has the ability to reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol. Stress included. These factor in heart disease.

I began my yoga journey with this lovely lady Adriene

Maybe you too could benefit from her videos, however, I would suggest starting off with classes! I hope that you join this journey, it truly is beautiful.

Welcome to the life of an Architect Pt 1

THE PEOPLE

The most important factor is the people that will be using the space that is designed. Each structure has a different purpose. Did you know that Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, originally made the game as an architectural simulator with living people to see how they would adjust to the buildings created? Following this, Maxis and EA Games discovered the idea and it took off.

COFFEE

Treasure it! Long nights and hard work. Every architect enjoys a good cup of coffee. It’s definitely perfect for every scenario such as long nights, meetings or site missions with clients!

PATIENCE

When working on a project it’s important to focus on the present rather than the future outcome, therefore the process will be more productive. Don’t expect things too early.

RULES

Push the boundaries and be spontaneous. We all learn with basic rules such as projects and exams but in the outside world, it’s important to negotiate and explore.

STYLE

When it comes to a personal style, stay open-minded. Remember that clients may request something different and you have to adapt. Notice the word adapt. Your style will always be in your work one way or another.

ENVIRONMENT

We are at a time where sustainable design can always be implemented in some way. Here are a few quick tips:

  • Recycled Materials
  • Eco-Friendly Lighting
  • Use of local materials/sources
  • On-site waste management
  • Building placement
  • Designing buildings with natural light and air-flow

Finding Freedom Inside Prison With Yoga

I knew I was going to cover Yoga as a topic this week, however, I had no idea I would be blessed with the opportunity to speak to SevaUnite about the Prison Freedom Project at Pollsmoor Maximum Facility in Cape Town.

Yoga and Meditation assist in the relief of suffering and rehabilitates the mind, body and soul. It brings a state of acceptance. This can alleviate the pain of prisoners who have wronged others, or sustained severe trauma.

Men are getting up at 5am to find some space and quiet to practice yoga.

SevaUnite began in 2010, conducting a series of Yoga rehabilitative classes at Pollsmoor Maximum Facility in Cape Town to the admissions centre, male juvenile section and the women’s unit. There is a Mindfulness Correspondence Course also available for volunteers and following this, there’s a Teachers Training Course that they can enrol in, should a passion begin to blossom.

A SevaUnite Volunteer, Shale Tinkler, shares some insight into his journey with the organisation and his own experiences with yoga/meditation.

What role do you play in SevaUnite and how long have you been involved?

I have been volunteering with Seva Unite since mid-2016, teaching yoga to offenders at Pollsmoor.

How can we as the public get involved with SevaUnite?

To get involved as an instructor or by making a contribution towards expenses, contact Seva Unite via their Facebook page or email leela@sevaunite.org. donations of any unused yoga mats are also welcome.

Describe some of your most memorable experiences whilst working with the organisation.

My most memorable experiences mostly involve seeing the powerful impact yoga has had on those practising. Over a 90 minute session of postures, breathwork and relaxation, tense, guarded facial expressions and body language visibly soften and become lighter, more gentle and open.

Some practising have reported that yoga helps them feel more calm & peaceful and deal with anger and stress in a positive way. Others mentioned how they were able to gain deep insight into themselves and their past and gain hope and a more positive outlook for the future.

My very best though, was once, after a deep relaxation at the end of a class when I asked how everyone was feeling. One responded with “I feel like I’m not in prison anymore”. I think this illustrates yoga’s potential, even in physical confinement, to bring about a powerful sense of inner freedom.

What inspired you to start Yoga/Meditation?

I was introduced to yoga by someone close to me, thinking that it would be a good form of exercise. While it definitely has been hugely beneficial for my body, what really keeps me coming back to my mat are the profound benefits I feel in my mind and spirit. When I practice consistently I feel more peaceful, more cheerful and more connected to those around me and to life itself. Yoga has helped me learn self-discipline and continues to help me learn to know and love myself.

SevaUnite also helps collect unused/unwanted clothing, toys and household items and allocates it to those that are in need.

Some quality time with Disco Volante

Interview by Tarryn Hardwicke

The future looks promising with  Psymedia | Recess pt.2, Vortex Phoenix Festival of Fire 2018 and more on the cards, it’s sure game. Disco Volante, the collaboration between Critical Mass (Daniel Honor) and Risky Business (Alex Inggs), give us the break down of their journey.

How did Disco Volante come about?

DV: We were big fans of each other’s music and a specific style of psytrance. Before we even wrote our first track together, we were coming up with a name for the project.

What/who inspires you and your music?

DV: It’s more of a feeling/emotion that we want to convey that has come from moments at parties over the years. When we find those notes that bring across that feeling in the studio, we know that we’re on the right track with what we want to play out.

What is your most memorable concert and why?

DV: In SA, probably Masqued Ball in 2014. We had worked super hard for the set and had a perfect response from the crowd during as well as after the set. Overseas would be Metagenesis in Mexico and Crystal Matrix in Portugal.

Do you have anything that you are currently working on at the moment? If so, please tell us!

DV: We’ve just released our 2 track EP ‘Back of Beyond’ Nexus Media. Currently, we’ve got remixes for Shift and Technicolor as well as a collaboration with CoRupt.

What upcoming parties will you be playing at that we can all get excited about?

DV: Off-hand we have Psymedia, Vortex Phoenix of Fire and Seeds of Freedom Festival (Portugal) coming up with more to be revealed along the way.

What has been your favourite part of Disco Volante’s journey?

DV: Getting the opportunity to travel, showcase our music and experience different cultures abroad.

Do you have any advice for today’s upcoming musicians wanting to join the industry? If so, what would it be?

DV: Be prepared to dedicate the next 10 years to reach your goal. There’s no fast-track to success besides hard work when it comes to your own productions. Also, finding your own unique style is the best way to set yourself apart from everyone else.

How has social media influenced your reach and your music in general?

DV: It’s a necessary evil. It would be great to just write the music and perform it, however, it’s hugely important to stay in touch with your fans. Platforms such as Youtube have such a big reach for our tracks in comparison to Soundcloud which helps spread our music around the world.

Describe yourselves with a meme.

HAPPY FRIDAY

Who makes a good Eggs Benny in Cape Town?

I spent a few weeks on a small project eating my all-time favourite breakfast – no complaints here – to find Cape Town’s finest places when it came to making a good Eggs Benedict! Not only did these restaurants serve an ultimate Eggs Benny, but they topped it with presentation and outstanding service.

Each place had their own unique touch and style and created a “homemade” Eggs Benedict and that’s what I loved most. If you are looking for something different then each place will be able to suit your benedict fix!

Cafeen

41 Third Ave, Claremont, Cape Town

Cafeen Eggs Benedict

Cafeen Eggs Benedict

Situated in Harfield, Cafeen serves a monster Eggs Benny served on an English muffin with hash browns, bacon and poached eggs topped with hollandaise. Feeling adventurous? Grab a milkshake – I definitely suggest the Ferrero Rocher. While you await your order you can view all the beautiful antiques that surround you or indulge at the candy corner after your meal! One word – toodamnyummy.

The Company Gardens

15 Queen Victoria St, Cape Town

Enjoy a delicious Eggs Benny surrounded by nature itself in the Company Gardens, in CBD. Choose your pick between bacon and a hash brown or go florentine! This was a nice choice for enjoying the outdoors and look on the bright side – you get to enjoy a nice post-stroll through the gardens!

Hemelhuijs

71 Waterkant St, Cape Town

Hemelhuijs Eggs Benedict

Hemelhuijs Eggs Benedict

I loved Hemelhuijs because they were unique in so many ways! Firstly, the dish was extraordinary! The bread was fresh and sweet topped with poached eggs and greens with perfectly done hollandaise and sided with an artichoke. The service was on point and fast and the inside of the restaurant was spectacular.

Truth Coffee

36 Buitenkant St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town

Add some Salmon to the mix! Truth Coffee makes a mad Eggs Benny with Spinach and Salmon on sourdough topped with famous hollandaise sauce. Surrounded by finely dressed staff with great attitudes and a beautiful scenery it’s definitely a win-win situation.

I had no choice but to share my findings with the world and I hope that you can BENE-fit from this! 😛

Happy Thursday!

Get Real Takes Their Second Event To The Next Level 05-06/05/18

We arrived at GET REAL Ft. Hot Bullet, Plastic Robots & More, located at Cape Town Ostrich Ranch, an outdoor venue just outside of Cape Town. We couldn’t have been blessed with a better day. Sunshine lit up the grounds and that’s where it all began.

Leading up to the event there was a lot of hype – social media was epic. There was a massive crowd involved in the marketing of the event on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and use of email. The Get Real Team really did a great job in getting the word out and creating an awareness about the event in advance.

I think we can all agree that the everyone looked absolutely incredible. If you weren’t there, check out Full Album – GET REAL for more photos. The music really had that crowd moving. The acts on stage were outstanding and mixed and matched dance, fire and disco vibes.

So there was the Main Stage and Tiki Beach Bar. It became dark and the visuals so intense! The lighting and cartoon/geometric screens were something I saw everybody zone into. I loved the vibe at Tiki Beach bar because it had its own theme, was constantly pumping and the palm trees just gave me that tropical feeling. The Main Stage was also a win because of the visuals, live acts and the lighting. Both stages had a grand line-up.

The Line-up

The line-up at GET REAL included both local and international DJ’s which had the crowd in memory lane after mixing up some classics. Below are the links to find their music in case you missed it!

Surfs Up, It’s Spring Tide!

All swimmers and surfers in Cape Town were warned about the Full Moons Spring Tide on Monday the 30th April and its powerful rip current. As a content creator, I grasped this opportunity and started capturing the tide.

For those of you who don’t know, Spring Tide has nothing to do with the season Spring, it is the alignment of the sun and the moon with the earth. The ocean is pulled back and forth by a gravitational force. This creates the tides.

Psymedia | Recess pt.1 – Bringing The Heat

Psymedia | Recess pt.1 hosted at District 20/04/18

Psymedia, supported by Olmeca Tequila & Red Bull.

I think it’s safe to say that Friday was an unforgettable event. I attend these events for the love of the music and more importantly the incredible memories that are made. As the saying goes “Events end, but the memories last forever.”

Psymedia held their event at District, a popular nightclub based in Harrington Street that hosts regular events on a weekly basis. Mad drinks specials were on the cards, as you all know, Happy Hour from 21h00-22h00. Not drinking? Grab a Redbull!

Psymedia’s event was 7 hours of Techno / Progressive / Psytrance. Basically pure bliss. I don’t know about you, but my feet were definitely moving! The music was on point from start to finish and there was not a moment that dancefloor was not occupied. What I couldn’t help notice was the strong interaction between the DJ’s and the crowd and this quote just stood out to me:

Music should either move your feet or move your heart.

However, I shall challenge this quote by saying that on Friday night I think the music did both.

21:00 – 23:00 Sacred Sun

23:00 – 00:45 Geometric Flux

00:45 – 02:30 Dynamic Range

02:30 – 04:00 Deliriant

These were all local artists and were absolutely incredible up there. Check out their SoundCloud – especially if you missed the event! The use of visuals and lighting created a mindblowing atmosphere. PUPIL Visuals

Need I say much? The photos tell the story. Uplifting, cheerful and great dancing partners!

Colourful Cape Town

WHEN ARCHITECTURE SHOWS ITS COLOURS

Bokaap, a vibrant and iconic neighbourhood situated at the foot of Signal Hill has unique and creative, meaningful architecture that brightens up the city with its colour palette. Bokaap area is a firm favourite with tourists and architectural history lovers alike.

Where do all these beautiful bright colours come from and why?

Some people say it all began when the people of Bokaap claimed their homes from the council and expressed their freedom in their own way, and this was through architecture. Some say the use of colour is a celebration of Eid within the Muslim community. It is also known to have been to express the Rainbow Nation.

Between 1790 and 1840 the style of Bokaap emerged. Each house has a similar design, a “stoep”, a Dutch or Victorian Style window and Cape Dutch Style door. These homes are required to maintain their facade for heritage and to continue its history.

The beautiful cobbled roads give you a warm feeling as they guide you around the neighbourhood. On a sunny day in Cape Town, you’re in for a treat! Buildings bursting with colour, heritage, and culture, all brought together through architecture.

Cape Town is a gem and forever growing.

What it really means to be an ARCHITECT

A R C H I T E C T

Ambitious

Reliable

Compassionate

Hardworking

Innovative

Talented

Experimental

Clever

Technical

Architects are dreamers. They have wild imaginations and unique minds. What makes a successful architect is one that has drive, passion and isn’t afraid to be different.  It takes a certain type of person to pursue this occupation and heres why:

Ambitious people are the ones that have a better chance of succeeding. Having drive and determination fuels your path to success. To be reliable shows that you respect your clients. Having compassion when conversing with clients is vital as you are turning their dream into a reality. An architect works hard to achieve their goals. Architects are innovative and come up with fresh and new ideas while exerting creativity and uniqueness. An architect has exceptional talent and grows more each and every day. To be experimental is to attempt the unknown and learn from mistakes. Architects are clever and extremely technical.

One needs to have optimism, realism or even better – both. Believe in your ability, attempt the unknown, while being prepared for anything. Turning wild ideas into reality while effectively conquering functionality at the same time is talent. When it comes to design, its either in your blood or it’s not, everybody was born with their purpose. One needs to be flexible and have the ability to juggle multiple projects at a time.

Most importantly, LOVE what you do.
